At Orleans Public Defenders, we go to the mat for our clientsevery day -- in the courtroom and in the community. Yet sometimes what stands between our clients and their success are barriers seemingly small but insurmountable to someone struggling to get by.
Robert needs a state ID card to apply for a job. Chanel needs diapers and other supplies for her infant daughter.Jacob needs warm clothes as he enters a rehabilitation and treatment program. Amanda needs basic furnishings after her release from prison.
No person should sink deeper into the legal system because they cannot afford the small costs that matter so much to their success.
That's why this holiday season, I'm rallying to raise money for OPD's Client Welfare Fund -- a reserve used to help our clients cover the small costs that stand in the way of opportunity.
Low-income, communities of color are most impacted by a legal system that punishes poverty and furthers inequities within our communities. Black and brown people are the ones most likely to be pulled into the legal system and face the biggest obstacles in exiting it.
Our Client Welfare Fund works to minimize some of those hurdles, so they can focus on their health, safety and success. Even a modest donation can have a HUGE impact on our clients’ lives. Please join me with your support.
