At Orleans Public Defenders, we go to the mat for our clients every day -- in the courtroom and in the community. Yet sometimes what stands between our clients and their success are barriers seemingly small but insurmountable to someone struggling to get by.

Robert needs a state ID card to apply for a job. Chanel needs diapers and other supplies for her infant daughter. Jacob needs warm clothes as he enters a rehabilitation and treatment program. Amanda needs and basic furnishings after his release from prison.

No person should sink deeper into the legal system because they cannot afford the small costs that matter so much to their success.

That's why this holiday season, I'm rallying to raise money for OPD's Client Welfare Fund -- a reserve used to help our clients cover the small costs that stand in the way of opportunity.

· For just $25, you can purchase books for one of our incarcerated clients

· For $50, you can provide an ID or birth certificate so a client can gain employment or services

· For $100, you can provide emergency food, clothing and personal items for someone struggling with houselessness and housing insecurity

· For $250, you can provide bus passes for dozens of our clients enabling them to get to medical appointments and other social services

· And for $500, you can help someone returning from prison furnish their new home

Low-income, communities of color are most impacted by a legal system that punishes poverty and furthers inequities within our communities. Black and brown people are the ones most likely to be pulled into the legal system and face the biggest obstacles in exiting it.
