At the Louisiana Center for Children's Rights, we go to the mat for our kids every day -- in the courtroom, in the classroom, and in the community. But sometimes what stands between our kids and success are barriers seemingly small, but insurmountable to a family that's struggling to get by.
That's why this holiday season, I'm rallying to raise money for LCCR's Small Favors Fund -- a reserve used to help our children and juvenile lifers cover the small costs that stand in the way of opportunity.
Let me tell you how I use this fund.
This year, a federal judge set aside our client Jessie's murder conviction and he was sent back from serving life at Angola prison to the Jefferson Parish Correctional Center to wait for the State to play our their appeals. Jessie is 45, and has been in prison since he was a child. Reading has become his safe place, his coping mechanism. The fund has allowed me to send Jessie a book as often as he needs one. "It has kept me focused on the path ahead, he told us at his last court appearance." He was reading TaNehisi Coates' The Water Dancer at the time. "This book gives me a much broader context for my struggle for freedom. It gives me hope."
No child should sink deeper into the legal system because they cannot afford the small costs that matter so much to their success.
