We are no longer accepting donations on this campaign, but there are other ways for you to support us today!
At the Louisiana Center for Children's Rights, we go to the mat for our kids every day -- in the courtroom, in the classroom, and in the community. Even during a pandemic, we're there for the children fighting for their freedom within Louisiana's criminal justice system. But sometimes what stands between our clients and success are barriers seemingly small, but insurmountable to a family that's struggling to get by.
Eric needs a Chromebook to access his virtual learning. Alyssa's family was evicted during Covid, but can't pay for the rental truck to move in with relatives. Wilson, having been sentenced as a child to die in prison, now needs a JPay device to talk with his mom and dad because family visits are suspended during the pandemic.
No child should sink deeper into the justice system, especially during this difficult period, because they cannot afford the small costs that matter so much to their success. Sometimes our staff covers these costs out of pocket -- in some cases literally giving kids the shoes off their feet. But this isn't sustainable, and these $50, $100, and $500 costs can really add up.
This holiday season, I'm rallying to raise money for LCCR's Small Favors Fund -- a reserve used to help our children and juvenile lifers cover the small costs that stand in the way of opportunity.
- For just $25, you can purchase soap and sanitizer for an incarcerated child
- For $50, you can provide one child with supplies (acrylic paints, etc.) to explore an interest safely at home
- For $100, you can rent a moving van for a family experiencing eviction
- For $250, you can purchase a Chromebook to aid a child with distance learning
- And for $500, you can help juvenile lifers get JPay devices so that they can keep in touch with loved ones during the pandemic
Black and brown children are the ones most likely to be targeted by the criminal justice system, and face the biggest obstacles in escaping it. I can spare a few bucks to remind a child that there is a world beyond their visible support network that is our here rooting for them. I hope you can, too.
Together, let's rally behind our community's most vulnerable children and former children... and change lives for the better. MAKE YOUR GIFT TODAY!
